In total, the merchant pays 0.2 per cent of the transaction amount to the ‘issuing bank’, i.e. the bank that issued the customer’s card. This is also the case with Tomorrow. A portion of this sum is then used to cover the actual costs of processing the transaction. We invest part of the remaining sum in the Spekboom restoration project in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. As part of this, three million native Spekboom plants are being planted on the 1,456 ha Hilton Farm; these plants sequester CO₂, prevent soil erosion and promote biodiversity.
