An account garnishment is a procedure used to collect outstanding debts. This allows creditors to access your bank account in order to recover the amounts owed. Usually, the process takes place in several steps: first, you receive a payment reminder, followed by a court order for payment, then an enforcement order, and finally a garnishment and transfer order. Public authorities – such as the tax office – are even allowed to carry out a garnishment without a prior court order.
